obesity complications

If your weight is around 20 percent higher than what is considered as a normal weight, you are obese. obesity complications include:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Some type of cancer
  • Gallbladder and gallstone disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • Breathing problems such as sleep apnea (person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep) and asthma

Although not everyone who is obese has these problems but if you have a family history of above problems you are at a higher risk for these problems.

It is very important in which part of the body the excess fat is gathered, if the excess body fat is mostly gathered around the waist (apple shape body) there is a higher risk for above problems rather than gathering excess body fat around hips (pear body shape).

In this article some obesity complications are explained briefly.

Heart disease

Overweight can lead to high blood pressure and increasing cholesterol that both of them increase the risk of heart diseases.

Losing weight can reduce the risk of heart disease. It is proved that losing 5-10 percent of weight can reduce the risk of heart disease.

Type 2 diabetes

Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Losing weight, following a normal diet, enough sleep and exercise can prevent type 2 diabetes.

If you have type 2 diabetes you can control your blood sugar level by losing weight and physical activities. Exercise can help reduce the amount of diabetes medicine you have to take.

Cancer

Being overweight, in women, associated with a variety of cancers including intestine, breast, ondometer, kidney and esophagus cancer. Some studies have shown that obesity is also related with gallbladder, uterus and pancreas cancer.

Gallbladder disease

gallstone and Gallbladder disease are some of the obesity complications . Ironically, losing weight especially during the short period of time, can increase the risk of these diseases. People who can’t lose weight more than 1 pond per week, may have less risk for getting gallbladder and gallstone disease.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a form of joint disease that most often occurs in knee, hip and lower back. Excess weight exerts extra pressure on these joints and cause rubbing and removing cartilages (a tissue that cover joint) that protect joints naturally.

Losing weight release the pressure on knee, hip joints and lower back and improve the osteoarthritis symptoms.

Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream. It leads to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints.

Gout is more common in people who are overweight. Rapid change in weight raise the risk of gout. If you have a family history of gout, it’s better consult with your doctor and find out the appropriate way for loosing weight.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder which is related with obesity. Sleep apnea can cause loud snoring and then stop the breathing during sleep for a short time. Sleep apnea can result in sleepy during the day and heart disease. Losing weight can improve sleep apnea.

Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (high blood sugar, blood pressure, excess body fat around the waist, abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride) is a cluster conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

If you have one of these symptoms it doesn’t mean you have metabolic syndrome but any of these condition can increase the risk of serious disease.

Metabolic syndrome is closely related to obesity and inactivity. More addition it is related to the insulin resistance. As usual, your gastrointestinal can breaks down the foods that you eat into the sugar or glucose. Insulin is a hormone that make by the pancreas and help sugar enter the cells to be used as fuel.

People who have insulin resistance, cells can’t response to the insulin naturally and glucose can’t enter to the cells easily. Consequently, although body try to control glucose by churning out more insulin but the level of blood glucose will increase.

Psychological consequences of obesity complications

In the cultures where physical attraction is depending on overly thin, peoples who are obese or over weight are always unsatisfied of their weight. Overweight people usually are blamed for their condition and they may consider as a lazy and weak willed person. It is not uncommon if they avoid to attend in the society or avoid of emotional relationship.
